In past few weeks, this new edible packaging has attracted tons of attention! This innovation proves that nothing is impossible in green design. Greener, more eco-responsible consumption really is possible!

Ooho is an edible packaging created by an English start-up called Skipping Rocks Lab. It’s objective is to reduce the use of plastic, particularly of plastic bottles which are responsible for a massive amount of the oceans’ pollution.

Here at IMS, sustainable development and the reduction of plastics are important concerns.  In a previous blog posts, we’ve talked about current eco-friendly production alternatives, such as including recovered plastic in new packaging.

Plastics and pollution facts

According to a study by Greenpeace, 245 million tonnes of plastics are used each year.  Only 14% of plastic packaging is recycled.

Also, 85% of plastic bottles bypass recycling entirely and end up polluting our streets, our beaches, and oceans, and contributing to the disappearance of marine species.

Finally, plastics have an impact on human health due to their use of harmful components, which for the most part, are endocrine disruptors.

Ohoo : The edible packaging of the future

More than ever, companies must be aware of these facts and adopt a responsible approach by reducing the use of plastics.

Skipping Rocks Lab takes this approach so much further! It sees itself as a “pioneer” in the use of natural materials (plant extracts, seaweed), on a mission to design packaging with low environmental impact.

Ooho is the first product to revolutionize the water market.

Here are some of its characteristics:

  • Water bubble, made up of 100% plant extracts and seeweed
  • Biodegradable
  • Edible packaging
  • Keeps for a few days
  • 5x less CO2 and 9x less energy to produce than plastic bottles

This edible packaging is an alternative to plastic bottles, waterproof cardboard and other containers.

Finally, according to Ooho’s designers, this innovation is the solution to reduce the plastic bottle waste reaching the oceans each year.

Will this innovation spark some ideas amongst the major industrialists? We hope so!
