HALAL product consumers are numerous and their product identification needs are different. HALAL labels and packaging must meet the needs and requirements of these consumers. The HALAL industry is growing and so is demand. Accordingly, industrialists are looking to exploit many new product niches. The industry is also strictcly regulated, and HALAL packaging and labels must include some mentions and certifications.

In this post we’ll talk about HALAL label standards and consumer needs

Here also is a previous post on HALAL labeling rules

HALAL product regulation

HALAL products are those “allowed” by Muslims, unlike “Haram” products which are forbidden.

Allowed foods are:

  • Fruit and vegetables
  • Most fish and seafood
  • Meat from animals slaughtered using Muslim methods
  • Milk and eggs from Halal animals

Fordidden foods are the following:

  • Pork and pork products
  • Animals dead before slaughter
  • Animals that are not slaughtered using Muslim method
  • Alcohol and drugs

This is why it’s important to identify your HALAL food packaging with HALAL-certified labels.

HALAL labels standards

In a previous post, we’d mentioned HALAL product standards and certifications.

Today, we’ll explain the function of these certifications as well as consumer expectations and requirements.

Here, are the main requirements for product certification:

  • Display the name of the certification agency or the person who certified the product
  • Check the reputation of the certification agency (there are close to a dozen organizations in Canada)
  • A HALAL logo can be displayed, but it must also contain the word “HALAL” in full

HALAL consumer needs

HALAL product consumers have unique needs and expectations regarding the labelling of the products they buy.

It’s important to be honest and transparent about your packaging, and choose a trusted certification agency.

These are decisive purchasing criteria for HALAL consumers.

Also, in addition to being HALAL certified, your packaging and labels must be attractive and original to stand out from your competitors!

The following components must be clearly identified on HALAL labels:

  • Enzymes
  • Emulsifiers
  • Flavors
  • Additives

However, the many additives, dyes, stabilizers, vitamins and minerals, and gelatin are called “Mushbooh”.

That means they are suspect. Indeed, there is no traceability on the composition of these additives. They can be made from plant, drugs, alcohol …

It’s very important to display the composition, origin and traceability of your products on your labels. This will provide an additional trust factor for your consumers.
